Everything you need to know about GPA โ weighted vs unweighted, AP and Honors courses, college requirements, and how to raise your GPA fast.
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is one of the most important numbers in your academic career. It affects college admissions, scholarships, financial aid, honor roll eligibility, and even job applications. This guide explains exactly how GPA is calculated and how to improve yours.
Most schools in the United States use the 4.0 scale to calculate GPA. Each letter grade corresponds to a specific number of grade points:
| Letter Grade | Percentage | GPA Points | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97โ100% | 4.0 | Exceptional |
| A | 93โ96% | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A- | 90โ92% | 3.7 | Very Good |
| B+ | 87โ89% | 3.3 | Above Average |
| B | 83โ86% | 3.0 | Good |
| B- | 80โ82% | 2.7 | Above Average |
| C+ | 77โ79% | 2.3 | Average |
| C | 73โ76% | 2.0 | Average |
| C- | 70โ72% | 1.7 | Below Average |
| D | 60โ69% | 1.0 | Poor |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 | Failing |
Convert each letter grade to its grade point value using the scale above. An A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
Multiply each course's grade points by the number of credit hours. A 3-credit course with an A = 4.0 ร 3 = 12 quality points.
Add up all the quality points from every course in the semester or year.
Divide the total quality points by the total number of credit hours attempted. The result is your GPA.
| Course | Credits | Grade | Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English 101 | 3 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| Math 201 | 4 | B+ | 3.3 | 13.2 |
| History 101 | 3 | A- | 3.7 | 11.1 |
| Biology 101 | 4 | B | 3.0 | 12.0 |
| Total | 14 | โ | โ | 48.3 |
GPA = 48.3 รท 14 = 3.45
Unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on the 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. An A in a regular class = an A in AP Chemistry = 4.0.
Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses like Honors, AP, and IB classes. This can push your GPA above 4.0 โ up to 5.0 on some scales.
| Course Type | Extra Points Added | Max GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | +0.0 | 4.0 |
| Honors | +0.5 | 4.5 |
| AP (Advanced Placement) | +1.0 | 5.0 |
| IB (International Baccalaureate) | +1.0 | 5.0 |
Most colleges recalculate your GPA using their own formula during admissions. They typically look at both weighted and unweighted GPA. A strong unweighted GPA (3.5+) combined with challenging coursework is more impressive than a high weighted GPA from easy classes.
| Goal | Minimum GPA | Competitive GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Ivy League / Top 20 | 3.7+ | 3.9+ |
| Top 50 Universities | 3.5+ | 3.7+ |
| State Universities | 3.0+ | 3.5+ |
| Community College | 2.0+ | 2.5+ |
| Medical School | 3.5+ | 3.8+ |
| Law School (Top 14) | 3.5+ | 3.8+ |
| Merit Scholarships | 3.5+ | 3.8+ |
| Academic Honor Roll | 3.5+ | 3.75+ |
